I can think of an ex-post-facto explanation for the Japan flag for you, if you want...

I got back from my first hyper-awesome trip to Japan where I was honored to be able to spend a few hours at the home of Leiji Matsumoto asking questions and generally fangeeking. The creator of "Captain Harlock" (known as "Albator" in France, the homeland of Daft Punk, which received a 100% ratings share for its final episode it was so popular) seemed interested in meeting with foreigners interested in his works.

In the conversation he mentioned that past visitors included these two young French musicians who told him that he was their hero and who wanted to work with him to make videos of their music. They were, of course, Daft Punk, talking about the project that later became "Interstella 5555".

Best thing - Matsumoto mentioned that they came without their masks on. So Leiji Matsumoto has seen the true faces of Daft Punk! That's gotta count for something for Japan!
